SimCity’s DRM Disaster

Electronic Art’s release of the latest and highly anticipated Simcity is to go down in history as one of the worst game launches ever. I’m sure like me, many of you have fond memories of the old Simcities, spending hours on your Intel Pentium laptop trying to build your perfect city. The new Simcity however, you will most likely be staring at a load screen losing the will to live. (Reticulating splines anyone?). This even makes Simcity societies look good, which frankly I would have rather paid someone to punch me in the face than play it. DRM is clearly not the way forward and hopefully game developers will learn from this.  1573 1 star Amazon reviews, which led to Amazon stopping sales for a period and marketing of the game has been stopped completely. If you’ve bought the game, let us know in the comments!

buy games? Seriously? When they put out crappy ports that don’t work right and have to be patched? And even then, not get patched?

My god. I thought it has been cracked finally… Anyway I hope now everyone sees how greedy EA is. They don’t care about customers or anything other than money. Shame that Maxis couldn’t release the game some other way.

Already filled with spammers i see…

I was gonna buy it but i wanted to see the deluxe edition drop in price first. A friend of mine got the limited edition on launch and then began the trouble. So even though i don’t have it yet, i was in on the trouble.

It just proves that the DRM requiring a server connection to play a game is the biggest FAIL ever. They will not win buying customers with this strategy but only loose them to piracy.

Ubisoft did a similar bummer when they released The Settlers 7. Initially the gateway server was overloaded and you couldn’t stay connected. Once you disconnected, the game saved and went to the main menu.

I refunded the game today. EB games accepted it, lol. They said their a many unsatisfied customers like me and they said they understand. They didn’t give me my cash back but they offered me a voucher or can choose another game instead.

As much as I hate it. It also kill the whole feel of previous SimCity games. They are many things I like about new SimCity (2013) too but the slot is too small. We known be came go into another slot but loading back and forth is also annoying. SimTown would be an appropriate product title. DRM is freaking annoying. I waited more than an hour to log in.

But, I going get it again when their is a big price drop.

I’m not giving any excuses to Maxis or EA, both have they’re good and bad moments, but in the UK the new SimCity didn’t had any connetion problems whatsoever (at least that’s what the gaming sites are reporting)… and in Portugal, where I’m from, it’s the same… So, in my humble opinion, yes, they did wrong by releasing the game without the infrastructure to support it, but it’s something specific, not global.

I bought the game one day after it was launched in the US. The problems have been solved to a great extent. Today I played 6 hours with only one time the server going down (and it was up within 10 seconds).

I got it too..couldnt play it since release. They wont give me a refound. But nevermind i put it on the shelf and try it out in few weeks or months.. at least we get a free game from ea on 18th march…even though im sure its some crap one. Hope we can choose which one. From today i think i torrent every game ea publish..they deserve that.

I would buy it for like $20 but not $60. That’s way too expensive for any game, specially one that I cant play whenever I want to.

Can we plz get a cleanup in the thread for once from the already piling up crap link spammers? TIA.

OT: IMO crack groups shouldn’t stoop to the “Diablo 3″ level again and bother reverse-engineering a cracked server to run this parody of a once beloved and pioneering franchise. Let EA and the misguided consumers who foolishly chose to line the company’s greedy pockets with their hard-earned cash wallow in this mess until they realize how toxic to gaming’s future all this DRM/AODRM/DLC/ODLC crap’s becoming, I say.

I was going to buy it, I was wary of the always online and anything to do with Origin but I love SimCity, but I didn’t have the cash come launch day. Glad I ran into financial trouble with the idiotic things that have been happening, makes the D3 launch look smooth salinity in comparison, atleast that was fixed within 3 days.

@#18: Civitas most likely is a scam. I’m not trolling.
The guy in charge of the kickstarted has made one Android game before, that’s it. There’s no official website, nor facebook or twitter.

Open your eyes people, civitas is a scam. But luckily, it doesn’t look like it’d finish its kickstarter anyway.

I agree with post #15 this is maybe a $20 game at best. No way in hell would I pay $60 for game. Hell other than supporting some smaller indie games via Steam I have not paid for a game, app or software for as long as I can remember.

on the subject, i think this aggressive DRM only hurts the end client. if they think piracy is their biggest problem, let’s see how much hair they’ll be pulling off their heads after this fiasco.
not to mention that piracy doesn’t hurt sales numbers. if anything they might even improve since people do know that the games they play aren’t developed for free.

offtopic: you should disable links on this kind of posts.

I think the concept could work against pirates, but the execution is poor.
If they would have sold it is an online game and had all server related problems fixed before launching the game, there wouldn’t have been so much trouble.
You can only pull this off if you have a good running server, like the WoW servers.
And… They shouldn’t have called it SimCity 5 / 2013 but SimCity Online!

But making a permanent connection to their servers compulsory for the ‘singleplayer’ game was a bad move, they could easily have made the game mostly pc based with only an occasional ‘phone home’.
You don’t have to go completely overboard to stop pirates…
(But to be honest, to stop the pirating of your games resorting to partly internet based games is the only real thing that still works, all other forms of protection can be broken.)

    My take on piracy;
    I have no money.
    So I can’t buy games.
My philosophy is this: If I don’t have money to buy games, no one would get more money from me if they stop piracy; I would still have no money to buy their games, so no one would benefit if I stop using pirated software…

It’s not just the DRM always-on server connections. The game is meant to be played as a multi-player. The maps are small in size and so you have to run adjacent cities OR connect to a friend, to help with trading and building. The game is setup for visitors to come visit your “city”, etc. It’s a f-ing social game not a God game is what they gave us. With Diablo 3, you could at least play the game solo after the initial server problems were worked out (and that took weeks to iron out) and Blizzard never made it so that D3 was all about the multi-player. With SimCity, Maxis made it clear: be social or get out.

To clear something out, because rlslog didnt get their info right. EA sent an email to all shops like amazon, gamestop and so on to stop all marketing campaigns of simcity until they figure out all server issues. EA also wants to make things right with its customers and thats why all buyers of simcity until the 18 of march will get a free EA game. However, it is not clear whether a customer can choose from the whole ea game catalog or just from a few ones.

There will be no crack for this game because everything is basically server-side. It simply isn’t worth the effort but I could care less because of it being online only, it also means no mods for you.

Over half the fun in Simcity 4 were getting mods to put in cities.

I dont know what you people are complainting about, the only problem with simcity I am facing is that you cant restart a city that you screwed up in or else the game is too fu that it is addicting

if they charged a microtransaction for it, like everywhere else, it might have been worth paying for it (and the subsequent Online Only crippling of it) but for a game that, unlike the previous Sim City releases, wont be playable 20 years down the track because the servers have been turned off is not worth paying full retail for as it is not a stand-alone product that can be officially “owned” and played at ones leisure offline!

The only way this would ever be cracked is if someone manages to Emulate the EA servers it connects to to trick the game into thinking its getting a login reply and allowing you in.
